The Delta State Government is to key into the new educational initiative of DAAR Communications in order to promote academic excellence in the state.
The state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, said this when the Chief Executive Officer of DAAR Communications, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, and his management team paid him a courtesy call in Asaba, the state capital.
Uduaghan said the state would quickly embrace the initiative and set up a technical committee to work out modalities with the organization.
He promised that Delta State would fast track the process of ensuring that DAAR Communications kicked off the television and radio educational programme to enable the Direct Home Broadcast Educational Programmes reach the populace on time.
He said: “I thank DAAR Communication for choosing Delta State to implement this educational programme.
“We will do whatever we can to fast track the operation of your television and radio station in the state.”
Speaking further, Uduaghan noted that the state had been faced with a lot of challenges, especially the improvement of education in the state and had concentrated on the construction of infrastructure, increasing the number of teachers and teaching aids.
The governor observed that the population of students in a class was also a challenge to his administration and has therefore determined to de-congest the number of people in a class and pegged it at 40 in a class.
“Just to assure you that we are doing a lot to improve the educational standard of our children, we have concentrated on infrastructure, improving on teaching aids and the training and re-training of teachers. We will quickly embrace this your initiative,” he stated.
In a brief address, Dokpesi stated that the team was in Asaba to intimate the governor of DAAR Communications’ initiative to promote quality education in order to reduce the poor academic performance of students in external exams.
He said the team also came to submit the letter from the Federal Ministry of Education authorizing DAAR Communications to introduce the Direct Home Service programme of 22 educational channels to states governments in the country.
Explaining further, High Chief Dokpesi said educational standard in the country was declining even as he said that his outfit would contribute its quota towards improving the quality of education in the country through satellite transmission.
Dokpesi said: “DAAR Communication decided to go into this initiative because of the poor educational performance of our students.
“About 72 per cent failed JAMB exam this year.
“We are launching a 22 educational channels of Direct Home Service to teach pupils from primary 1 to SS 3.
“It is to compliment the effort of state governments and create opportunity for pupils and students to improve on their Knowledge.
“The Federal Ministry of Education directed that this programme be made available to every Nigerian child from public and private school.”
The high point of the visit was the presentation of the letter of authority from Federal Ministry of Education to Governor Uduaghan.
