The 16th edition of the Delta State Federations Cup has recorded a major upset, as Glo Premier League side, Warri Wolves FC, was sent packing by an unknown first timer, God’s time FC, in the semifinal.
The match, which took place at Ughelli Township Stadium ended 5-4 in a penalty shootout in favour of God’s Time FC after the game ended 1-1 at regulation and extra times.
Ecobank is the sponsor of the Delta FA Cup.
Giant killing God’s Time FC will now trade tackles with J. Atete FC in the grand finale of this year’s Delta State Federation Cup at the Warri City Stadium on April 9.
To get to the final, J. Atete FC defeated Anioma FC 3-1 in the semifinal.
Anioma FC had beaten Bobbies United 6-4 on penalties in their quarterfinal clash, while the local derby between J. Atete FC and J. Atete Feeders team ended 8-3.
For their failure to progress beyond the semifinal, Warri Wolves FC, which is campaigning in the CAF Confederations Cup, will face Anioma FC in the third place match.
The Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, will be the special guest of honour at the grand finale and is expected to lead other top government officials as well as management and staff of the sponsor, Ecobank.
The Secretary of the Delta State Football Association, Friday Onothoja, said FA Cup competitions are characterised by surprise elements all over the world, adding that the exit of Warri Wolves in the semifinal was good and healthy for football development in Delta State and in Nigeria.
Onothoja hinted that the Delta FA under the leadership of former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, would roll out the drums to celebrate the rich football culture of the state and also appreciate Ecobank for its consistent sponsorship of the competition in the past 15 years.
