Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, said on Tuesday that the state government spends N7.2 billion annually to augment primary school teachers’ salaries.
The commissioner gave the figure in Asaba, the state capital, while presenting the mid-term report of his ministry.
Muoboghare said the figure represented about N600 million monthly augmentation of the teachers’ salaries by the state government.
Muoboghare said though it was the responsibility of the local governments to pay teachers salaries, the state government decided to augment it, to promote industrial harmony.
He also said that the state government had fully implemented the payment of the 27.5 per cent Teachers Salary Scale.
“Government has also implemented the 15 per cent allowances for special education teachers in the state and has effected regular payments of the Universal Basic Education counterpart funding up to date,” he said.
He said that the Delta State Government’s commitment to education in the state was absolute, adding that the ministry got N59.6 billion this year for capital projects.
The commissioner said that the state was also paying attention to special education in line with the National Policy on Education.
He said: “Eight Special Needs Learning Centres have been established for children of primary school age across the state.
“The centres have a population of 758 children made up of 424 males and 334 females.”
