Delta 2015: IYC Western Zone pushes for Ijaw man

As controversy over which Senatorial District of Delta State should produce the next governor of the state rages on, the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone is pushing for an Ijaw man to emerge as next governor of the oil rich state.
The group said it was high time an Ijaw took a shot at the governorship position of the state saying the Ijaws have equal right to contest for the seat.
Delta state political structure is divided mainly between the Delta North Senatorial District, mainly Anioma (Ibos), the Central comprises of Urhobo and South which have three ethnic groups of Ijaws, Isokos and Itsekiris.
According to IYC, political pundit have argued that going by the permutations, the Delta North is assumed to be more favoured to have the governorship seat since the Central which comprises of Urhobo have had their turn in Chief James Ibori, while Delta South is also taking its turn incumbent Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Rising from its meeting held at Teebilous Hotel in Warri, the commercial nerve centre of Delta State, the group led by Comrade Preye Okaba, said that such political calculation would only breed mediocrity, incompetence in the geopolitics and governance of the state.
The group therefore aligned itself with claims by several prominent persons in the state including the Secretary to the State Government, Comrade Ovouzorie Macaulay,the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Victor Ochei and others that there was “no zoning or rotation arrangement” for the governorship of the state.
The group however appealed to Deltans irrespective of tribe, religious and political afflictions to give the Ijaws the chance to produce the next governor saying that an Ijaw emergence would surely better the lot of Deltans.
While soliciting for the support for other ethnic nationalities in the call for an Ijaw man to emerge as governor of the state come 2015, the group said that as a socio-cultural group, which mandate includes ensuring good governance in the body politics, they are duty bound to monitor whosoever emerge as governor of the state.
The group said that it was still consulting and at the appropriate time it would throw its weight behind any credible Ijaw man vying for the governorship seat.
