Delta 2015: 15 opposition parties begin campaign for Delta North governor

The race to succeed the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has assumed a new twist.
Fifteen chairmen of opposition parties under the aegis of the Association of Registered Political Parties, comprising the ethnic nationalities of the state, on Thursday swung into campaigns for a female candidate overnor to take over from Uduaghan come 2015.
The parties include Kowa Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Alliance for Democracy, Advance Congress of Democrats, African Democratic Party, National Conscience Party, Accord Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Action Alliance, Mega Progressive Party and Peoples Party of Nigeria among others.
According to the parties, since the advent of democracy in 1999, men have gotten their fair share by being at the forefront of political action across the state, hence women should be given the chance to perform.
Led by the Chairman of the association, who doubles as the Chairman of the state chapter of the Accord Party, Comrade David Ashekodi, popularly known as the Political John the Baptist, the chairmen at the palace of the Obi of Akwukwu-Igbo, Dr. David Azuka, said for equity, justice and fairness, a woman from Delta North Senatorial District should take the state’s mantle of leadership in 2015.
Ashekodi said: “Delta Central had gotten its fair share of the governorship seat.
“Delta South is currently savouring its slot with the incumbent Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.
“For the state to enjoy a guaranteed peace by 2015, the best political arrangement must be arrived at.
“Power must rotate to the Northern part of the state.
“Equity, justice and fair-play is demanded in 2015.
“We will not fold our alms and watch the state to slide into anarchy.
“Men have been at the helms of affairs since 1999.
“This time around, women must be given the chance to perform.
“After all, the likes of Dora Akunyili, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ngozi Olejeme have delivered in their various appointments.
“So why not as governor of Delta state?”
While the group called on the monarch to consider their position as “overriding principle” for equity, the monarch lauded their advocacy and warned them against acrimonious consultation.
The monarch, who threw his weight behind their vision for a Delta North Governor in 2015, wondered why over 10 aspirants have indicated interest in succeeding Uduaghan.
He said: “I am a strong advocate of Delta North for governor in 2015.
“Anybody that comes on board in 2015 as the only candidate from the district will get my full support.
“Our people should put their house in order and produce one credible candidate for the election.”
