The traditional ruler of Abavo Kingdom in Ika South Local Government of Delta State, His Royal Highness Obi Uche Irenuma II, is now on the run.
No thanks to the crisis he allegedly triggered, which reportedly led to the death of several persons, including the gruesome murder of one John Ogochukwu Okoh, 40, and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ayo Ikechukwu Aduba, had on several occasions expressed displeasure at the role played by the monarch in the crisis rocking the community over oil discovery and his monarchical throne.
A statement issued by the command headquarters, Asaba, dated January 20, 2014, portrayed the monarch as a “dishonoured king”, having raised false alarm that his mother (the Queen mother) was kidnapped and killed, “knowing same to be fallacious and sponsoring violence against homogenous community”.
Corroborating his boss, DSP Charles Muka, who acted as the Police Public Relations Officer when the command spokesman, ASP Lucky Uyabeme, died in auto crash, said in a statement that the embattled monarch did not only raise a false alarm, he was accused of instigating his driver, Osakpanwan Ebosa, 32, to steal a nine-year-old boy, Winners Igbinowamhia, for ritual purpose.
The Obi’s driver was reportedly nabbed while escaping with the stolen child in his Gulf 3 car with registration number GGG 767 XD, according to the PPRO, “by curious Abavo youths who promptly mobilised in search of the suspect and the victim”.
The statement on Wednesday said: “We have sent series of summons to his palace requesting him to appear at the commands headquarters, Asaba to answer various allegations ranging from murder, kidnapping, arson, conspiracy to breach of public peace without any respond. We did not want it get to this extent because as a royal father we believe he should be above bond. We have shown sufficient respect for the kingdom as law enforcement agents.”
While anger rages among the youths of the kingdom, Aduba has labeled the kingdom as “a restive community, a community that has since divided along political lines and cleavages, enjoying months of uneasy calm that has nosedived into crises.”
He warned that any person(s) arrested, no matter how highly place, will be dealt with according to the law, even as he assured that adequate measures have been stepped up to guarantee law and order.
