The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has rewarded the home based Super Eagles with N17 million ($100,000) despite crashing to the Black Stars of Ghana in Wednesday’s semi-final tie at the ongoing African Nations Championship in South Africa.
Abdullahi believes that such gesture will boost the players morale ahead of the national team’s engagements in the nearest future.
He added that the team deserves to be encouraged for for being the country’s good ambassadors.
He said: “We believe that the boys gave a good account of themselves in South Africa and there is reward for hard work.
“They fought to the last minute of game against Ghana and that translates the amount of love they have for their country.
“So, we have decided to still reward them with the $100,000 as promised as such gestures will spur them to do more in the future for their fatherland.”
The Eagles will pocket N17 million for a second time courtesy of the National Sports Commission after picking the first one for taming the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the quarter-final of the competition.
