The proposed Centenary City, being designed as part of the series of activities marking Nigeria’s 100 years of amalgamation, is to be quoted on the Nigeria and London Stock Exchanges.
Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who disclosed this on Thursday night at a dinner in Abuja, was delighted to announce that already, the Capital Call of $100 million for the City has been over-subscribed.
Anyim spoke at a dinner hosted in honour of Chief Executive Officers at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said: “It is the desire of the promoters of the city that in the nearest future, the stock of the city would be quoted on the Nigeria and London Stock Exchanges.”
The SGF said Price Waterhouse Coopers has been appointed financial consultants to guarantee transparency at every stage of the city’s development in line with international best practice.
He also recalled that Messrs DDB, Lagos was appointed the official marketer of the centenary activities during the flag-off recently.
According to Anyim: “The entire celebration is planned to be investment driven such that nobody should put in a kobo without getting value for it.”
In his address, President Goodluck Jonathan said he is excited that all aspects of the centenary celebration will be private sector-driven because of the faith the administration has in the private sector.
Jonathan said: “The private sector should take the lead in realizing this our national aspiration.
“Your support will identify you and your brand with national success.
“We are encouraging a citizen-driven commemorative event that will replace negative narrative of the nation with a story of a blessed nation.
“Experience has shown that most of the things done by government do not last.
“They may look good at the beginning but at the end, they always fall like a pack of cards.
“We are thinking of a city where you don’t need to carry cylinder to look for gas, where you do not have to dig borehole before getting water, where you don’t have to generate your power before getting electricity and where you don’t have to hire a private security man to ensure your safety.”
