Odera was kicked out of office in 2003 and Dr. Chris Ngige took over the governance of Anambra State in controversial circumstances, following the elections, but he quickly went to work. He not only cleared the arrears of salaries being owed by Odera’s government, he paid the recurrent salaries as and when due. As a result, civil servants and teachers resumed work.

Apart from the failed attempt made by General Sani Abacha to take over the company when he was the military head of state, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo also tried to close the company when he was the President and this coincided with the time he had a frosty relationship with his deputy, Atiku Abubakar. It is instructive at this point to recall that pre and post independence media organizations owned by regions in our geographical entity were largely cleavage based, it is instructive to intimate that they served interests of the regions for the greater good of the country. To illustrate how the early press in Nigeria was based on regional ideology was not meant to last forever, most of them fizzled out after satisfying their relevance, which were largely for agitations. An example of such situations is Wednesday’s motion which ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and the Nigerian Ports Authority to reverse the termination of its contract with INTELS. In discussing this motion, as shown on Channels Television News at 10, the House was divided along party lines but at the end of the day, those who wanted a situation the termination “reinstated” pending the conclusion of investigations of an ad hoc committee set up to look into the matter carried the day.
