The Bayelsa Command of Nigeria Police on Thursday started a training for no fewer than 45 officers and men in the state as part of efforts to enhance their professionalism.
Don Awunah, the State Commissioner for Police, represented by his Deputy, Abiodun Alabi of the Department of Finance and Administration, declared open the two-day training programme in Yenagoa.
Awunah said the programme, organised by the state command in conjunction with the International Committee of Red Cross, was to enhance professionalism in the police.
The commissioner said the participants, which include Superintendent of Police and Constables, would focus on international humanitarian principles and police best practices.
He said: “The International Committee of Red Cross is here today to interact with us as critical stakeholder in service to humanity to educate the officers toward achieving quality service delivery.
“Yes, the major objective of the training is to build capacity for the police as well as ensure professionalism among the officers.
“Professionalism is one that we as a force must begin to tackle and improve upon.
“With the training, I believe that the officers’ professional conduct will improve; I am urging the participants to make the good use of what they will learnt from the programme.”

commended the organisers of the training, saying that the programme had started to impart quality knowledge in them.
Ekon said: “So far, the training has started to open our knowledge towards achieving the police best practices, not only in Bayelsa, but Nigeria at large.”
Another participant, William Abari, said the training was a welcome development in building the officers’ capacity for best practices.
Abari assured that the knowledge gained from the programme would be utilised for the protection of lives and property.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that training, which commenced on Thursday, would end on Friday.
