Boko Haram: Why insurgents keep increasing – Islamic scholar

An Islamic scholar, Alhaji Saheed Timehin, has urged the Federal and State Governments to ask pertinent questions on why insurgents keep increasing rather than decreasing, even as security forces keep killing them in large numbers.
Timehin raised this poser in his lecture at the 5th Annual Ramadan Public lecture organised by IEDPU, Eti-osa Branch at White Sand, Lekki, Lagos State at the weekend with the theme: “The Role of Muslims in Nations Building.”
Timehin, who is also a lecturer at the Lagos State University, said: “A nation that fails to take care of her citizens, particularly the unemployed youths, clergies and security agents, will never witness peace and instead will continue to have one crisis after another, because the youths who went to school, graduated and have no employment to take care of himself will be victims of circumstances.
“Both the Federal and State Governments in the country should look inwards and notice that despite the killings of bandits by security men, their number still increases on daily basis, because what made people to turn to criminals is still there.
“If the government takes good care of the security agents’ welfare, there will be full commitment from that end to detect and fight diligently and if not, the situation will continue to get worse because some of the security apparatus may even become informants to the militants just for money.”
While noting that security was everybody’s business, Timehin implored both Islamic and Christian clergies, who protect politicians and Nigerian leaders with prayers, to always be bold to mandate such leaders and politicians to take care of the citizenry and not just collect money from them.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of IEDPU, Eti-osa branch, Alhaji Hassan Abdul Hamid Bello Agbaji, was optimistic that public lectures and constant information to the people, especially Muslims, will educate our youths on the ways and need to protect Islam and desist from joining bad groups that can cause crisis in the country and bring bad name to the religion.
Agbaji however urged the youths to desist from bad activities and look for productive ways of earning a living.
He further implored them to resist being instruments of politicians and unscrupulous people in the country to foment trouble.
