The Bill on the creation of State Police on Thursday passed the First Reading in the House of Representatives.
The Bill was introduced by Hon. Kayode Oladele.
Known as the: “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Alteration) Bill 2018,” the Bill seeks an alteration for the creation of State Police following the insecurity around the country.
The leadership of the National Assembly had following the incessant killings across the country moved in support of the creation of State Police.
The process has already begun in the Senate.
The Senate Ad-committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution met about two weeks ago on the issue after plenary.
The Senate moved in support of State Police and Community Policing a week before then over the incessant killings in the country.
It gave the committee two weeks within which to submit a report on the matter.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who is the Chairman of ad-hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, made the announcement at the commencement of plenary in the Senate on Tuesday.
The House of Representatives, The Eagle Online, is adopting the proposed Bill by the Senate in order to fast track its passage.
The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has also spoken in support of State Police and Community Policing.
