Bauchi police arrest 50 suspects, rescue 49 hostages in one month

The Bauchi State Police Command said on Wednesday that it had arrested 50 suspects and rescued 40 hostages within one month.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Haliru Gwandu, made this known in Bauchi while briefing newsmen on the achievements of the command.
Gwandu said the suspects included 35 suspected kidnappers, 10 armed robbers, five cattle rustlers and one impersonator, while 45 suspects had been charged to court.
He also said 49 hostages, including one Alhaji Adamu Yakubu, the District Head of Tama in Toro Local Government Area of the state, were rescued within the period.
The commissioner also disclosed that 171 cows and 133 sheep and goats as well as N176,770 cash were recovered from the suspects within the period.
Gwandu said 21 assorted guns, 309 round of assorted ammunition, seven cartridges, five vehicles and nine motor cycles were also recovered from the suspects.
He said the state was being threatened by insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery, cattle rustling, rape and other violent crimes.
He said Balmo forest in Darazo, Buzum forest in Ganjuwa, Yuga forest in Toro and Yankari Games Reserves in Alkaleri as places where criminals were taking refuge to commit crimes.
According to Gwandu, the forests were making it difficult for law enforcement agencies to operate due to the difficult terrains, poor communication network and scattered settlements.
