Akpabio’s house vicinity, 24 Akwa Ibom schools serve as hard drug trade centres – NDLEA

The vicinity of the house of Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state and 24 public schools in the state have been identified as centers for trade in hard drugs.
This was revealed by the Akwa Ibom State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Josephine Obi.
Obi, who wrote the state Commissioner of Education, Eunice Thomas, on the findings of the NDLEA, said the usage of schools and other public places for the sale of hard drugs was likely to have negative impacts on the performance of the students.
Obi said the anti-drug agency found about 200 persons, including the physically challenged, trading in hard drugs close to Akpabio’s residence.
Some of the heads of the schools in the state have confirmed the development to Thomas.
The heads of the schools said the students who engage in the illegal trade even threaten them when corrected.
Thomas said: “I have been interacting with the principals and school heads on a regular basis and have personally visited some of these schools but none of them ever informed me about this situation.
“I usually work on information available to me and if I am not informed, how will I know?”
