Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State on Thursday urged new commissioners in the state not to allow the current politicking to distract them from performing their duties.
The governor gave the advice at the swearing in of 16 newly appointed commissioners and two Permanent Secretaries in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The governor advised those who aspire for public office to do so on the basis of what values they wish add to the system rather than what they expect to gain from it.
“Similarly, I restate my call on all political parties to evolve a democratic process that throws up those committed to rule of law and good governance,” he said.
Ahmed advised the new commissioners to make accountability, probity and diligence their watch words in the discharge of their official duties.
He, therefore, warned them that they should not see their appointment as business as usual, but as a call to serve the people.
He added: “You must also be mindful that in line with Performance Contracting, we will appraise your performance on a regular basis to ensure compliance with set targets.
“You must, therefore, roll your sleeves and get to work immediately to make ‘Shared Prosperity’ more meaningful to our people.
“You must key-in to the programme to re-assure the people about our commitment to building better schools and hospitals, more roads, energy and portable water projects.”
Ahmed said that the state was on the verge of significant socioeconomic expansion that would create thousands of jobs and unprecedented development of infrastructure.
This, Ahmed stressed, would stimulate economic activities in the state and enhance the standard of living of the people.
The governor stressed that Youth Empowerment remained central to his administration’s Shared Prosperity programme.
“The QuickWin Intervention, therefore, aims to move more youths from unemployment to empowerment through direct jobs and entrepreneurship”, he added.
He expressed his administration’s readiness to support the private sector’s capacity to generate new jobs for the youths through targeted support and incentives.
“We are similarly committed to promoting entrepreneurship especially in the informal sector given its pivotal role in stimulating economic activities and jobs,” he added.
The governor, therefore, called on youths of the state to remain hopeful and shun despair.
