The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria on Sunday said the performance of the Super Eagles in Saturday’sAFCON qualifiers against Tanzania exceeded the 1-0 scoreline.
The Super Eagles defeated the Taifa Stars of Tanzania by that slim margin in a “dead rubber” encounter played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The President of SWAN, Honour Sirawoo, gave the team’s assessment while speaking with journalists in Uyo.
Sirawoo said: “The scoreline was not the true reflection of the match as the performance of the team superseded the outcome.
“We are beginning to see a team that is ready to play. I did see a bunch of players that are now working towards becoming a gang.
“They should have scored more than one, in fact their work rates was encouraging. All that is left is for the manager to build on this foundation.
“The team had an impressive game with Gernot Rohr.”
According to Sirawoo, the Eagles created many chances that should have resulted in goals.
He also commented: “They were not able to execute those chances probably because they are yet to blend.”
Sirawoo said the changes made during the game were a fact that we needed a foreign coach.
He also stated: “You can see some of the changes Coach Rohr made. This is something difficult for local coaches to do.
“With the foreign coach now, our home coaches will learn more and even build confidence to exercise authority when they are given responsibility.”
The SWAN President urged Nigerians to be patient with Rohr in his bid to build a new and strong Super Eagles.
