Ibrahim Zikirullah, the Chairman of the Transition Monitoring Group, on Thursday said that 633 observers would monitor the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State.
Zikirullahi said at a news conference in Awka, the Anambra State capital, that 600 observers would be deployed in pairs to 300 polling units that have been randomly sampled across the state.
According to him, TMG will closely watch the process and record answers to 36 questions on the conduct of the election and send reports to a National Information Centre.
He said: “This will allow TMG to share with the country a truly representative and detailed picture of the conduct of the poll.
“TMG will also verify the accuracy of the official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the results were not tampered with between the polling unit and collation centres.”
The chairman commended the speed with which the Supreme Court determined the appeal filed before it on the disputed Peoples Democratic Party primary election.
However, the group urged political parties to practice internal democracy in order to stem incessant resort to courts in the political process.
“TMG also commends the release of electronic copies of the voters’ registers to political parties and the adoption of a new system for the distribution of election materials,” he said.
Zikirullahi urged INEC to publish the results of the election at the polling units and various collation centres, as prescribed by the Electoral Act.
He also appealed to security agencies to be impartial and neutral in the discharge of their duties during the elections.
The group advised the people to take their fate into their hands by exercising their franchise in the election.
He urged the stakeholders to work towards free and credible poll.
