Imo civil servants resume work after three-day strike

Civil servants in Imo State on Monday resumed work after a three-day warning strike against delayed promotions and eight months salary arrears owed staff of parastatal agencies.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored government offices in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Monday, reports that the offices, which were under lock, were open and the workers at their duty posts.
A union leader, Humphrey Ukaegbu, told NAN that the workers resumed duties following the intervention of Governor Rochas Okorocha, who promised to settle their problems.
Ukaegbu said the governor promised to look into the issues leading to the strike, especially the delayed promotion of workers.
He said: “He has promised to settle the salaries of the workers who have been owed for months.
“In fact, he said he would settle the issues requested by the joint negotiating council.
“So we are back now but expect His Excellency to implement what he has promised.”
Also speaking, Paul Osuagwu, a worker, said the governor had done well and urged him to consider the welfare of workers.
Osuagwu said: “We commend him for his works in the state, but the problem is that he does not pay much attention to the workers.
“He forgot that we are the pillars of the state’s welfare.
“We were not happy going on the strike because we would not want to breach our work.
“But we are now ready to work and hope that he will fulfill his promises.”
