FEC considers harsher punishment for non-compliance with EIA

The Federal Executive Council will, on Wednesday, consider the imposition of harsher penalties on companies that violate the country’s Environmental Impact Assessment laws.
The memo to this effect, which is to be tabled before the Council by the Minister of the Environment, Hadiza Malifa, proposes an upward review of the penalty for non-compliance with the provisions of the EIA Act No. 86 of 1992.
The proposal is also seeking the approval of the FEC for Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure compliance with the provisions of the law.
Also to be considered on Wednesday by the FEC is a memo on the revised National Civil Aviation Policy 2013.
This is aimed at streamlining the operations of the country’s aviation sector.
The memo is to be presented by the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah.
The Ministers of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, and Education, Prof. Ruqayyat Rufa’i, are also expected to brief the Council on developments affecting their ministries.
