Ondo State Government on Monday, distributed relief materials worth N50 million to the victims of various disasters in the state.
Distributing the materials to the beneficiaries in Akure, the State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, said the gesture was to cushion the effect of the natural disaster on the affected victims.
Ajayi, who explained that there were natural and man-made disasters, urged the people in the state to always take precautionary measures against disaster such as switching off electrical gadgets among others to avoid future occurrence.
He also said the gesture was part of government’s agreement with the people of the state, “to always be there for them”.
The victims include those that lost their houses, shops and property to flood, wind and fire disasters in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that materials distributed include cement, corrugated iron sheets, palm oil, bags of rice and beans, ply wood and mattresses.
An undisclosed amount of money was also given to those that their shops and houses were razed by fire last December.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, who was represented by the Head of Operations of the agency, Adebiyi Babatunde, commiserated with the affected people.
Maihaja said the Federal Government collaborated with the state to handover the relief materials to the affected communities.
He said disaster management outfit was necessary to ensure that the rights of citizens to security and protection were ensured.
Maihaja, however, called on the state governments to establish and adequately equip their emergency management agencies.
The NEMA boss said state governments should also equip their local government councils for proper management of disasters through the creation of Early Warning System and reduce time during emergencies.
According to him, EWA, effective coordination, collaboration, and cooperation are the essential ingredients in disaster risk reduction.
