34 sentenced to life in Erdogan assassination plot during failed coup

A Turkish court on Wednesday sentenced 34 defendants to four aggravated life sentences each, in a case focused on a military unit that allegedly aimed to kill President Recep Erdogan in 2016 failed coup, a local media reported.
It said one of the defendants sentenced is Gokhan Sahin Sonmezates, a General accused of being part of the junta that attempted the coup.
The local media further said one was acquitted.
According to court documents, two police officers were killed by the unit.
It added the defendants were also accused of trying to overthrow the constitutional order.
However, Erdogan had left the building the unit targeted before the soldiers arrived and was unharmed.
