Egypt on Sunday booked a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics by winning the African Women’s Beach Volleyball 2016 Olympic Qualifiers in Abuja.
Egypt emerged winners of the qualifiers after they defeated Rwanda 2-1 in the final match of the four-day qualifiers at the Jabi lakeside.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Final Beach Volleyball Olympics Qualifiers began on Thursday and ended on Sunday.
The qualifiers were hosted by the Nigeria Volleyball Federation in conjunction with the Confederation of African Volleyball.
Egypt’s team 1 of Elghabashy Tawik and Meawad Hassan beat Rwanda’s team 2 of Judith Hakizimana and Selaphine Mokantambara 21-14, 21-17 for a 2-0 victory in the final’s first match.
In the second game, Egypt’s team 2 of Lamis Nasir and Randa Radwan lost to Rwanda’s team 1 of Charlotte Nzayisenga and Denyse Mutatsimpundo 9-21, 18-21.
The fixture then went to a golden match, with Egypt’s team 1 defeating Rwanda’s team 1 21-19, 21-20 for a 2-0 victory.
The North Africans thus recorded a 2-1 win to claim the lone ticket at the qualifiers which featured 10 countries and involved 20 teams.
NAN reports that Rwanda, with the second-place finishing, has now secured a place in the 2016 World Cup Women Beach Volleyball in Europe.
NAN also reports that the 2016 Olympic Games will hold from August 5 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
