Why ACP Kyari is successful as a police officer – Subordinates

Some of the men that worked with Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, in the Lagos State Police Command before he moved to Force Headquarters, Abuja, said he was always fond of saying: “I believe everything that is worth doing, is worth doing well. I believe in seeking knowledge and ideas wherever I go and in whatever I do. I don’t believe in people thinking they have monopoly of knowledge.”
Kari was at the head of the Special Inspector General of Police team that rescued the kidnapped schoolgirls of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to those who have worked with him, these principles apparently made him to top other police officers in his policing.
One of them said: “Kyari always rubbed minds with his juniors and seniors officers. He doesn’t mind the person’s status. His ability to mix with local people makes it easy for him to know the terrain of a case. He ensures that his men are fully briefed on their missions. He gives his men room to ask questions and chip in their ideas. He ensures his men are fully motivated and all their logistics taken care of.”
Kyari has built a trust between him and his men, which through the years assisted him a lot in achieving great feats. Some many of his men have described him as fair and just.
They explained that Kyari stands by them during tough times, especially during times of injuries.
He has made it his duty to extend a brotherly hand to his men, especially if they died in the course of duty.
He personally takes over financially catering for the widows and kids. Kyari is down to earth and accessible.
A policeman said: “He doesn’t see himself as a boss, but a team leader. We eat and wine together. He used to attend our wedding and other ceremonies. He encourages hard work and always celebrates outstanding individual or group performances. This makes other policemen to want to do better. He believes so much in the abilities of his men. He works round the clock when he has serious cases on ground. Most times, he eats once a day, sleeps for less than three hours.
“He would shut down all other activities and focus on the case at hand 24/7. He brainstorms and instructs his men in the field on what to do. He’s always thinking of many possibilities when handling cases and proffering solutions in advance for any possible outcomes.”
Kyari and his team usually deploy cutting edge technology when going after criminals. He has trained his men on how to go about this.
One of his men said: “The operation from our side is intelligence-driven. We brainstorm all night to know exactly who and who we’re supposed to target and how we can get them.”
Reflecting on the rescue of the three schoolgirls, the policeman said: “We moved into Ikorodu and combed the area for four days. Nobody knew we were policemen. Kyari led us. We are in Decoy Vehicles and dressed like ordinary Nigerians without a sign to show we were cops. That was how we penetrated and got this kingpin of the kidnappers, Emmanuel Arigidi. We took him by total surprise.”
