The Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists on Monday updated the public about the assault last year at Seme Border on a Badagry, Lagos State-based journalist, Otunba Yomi Olomofe.
At the conference to address newsmen was the Chairman of the NUJ in Lagos State, Deji Elumoye; Olomofe; and a human rights activist, Comrade G.T. Ogunye.
Elumoye said the June 25 assault of Olomofe at the premises of the Nigeria Customs Service has been approached with a lot of effort establish the exact cause of the incident and was such a barbaric act was carried out.
He said the NCS said the incident will be investigated, but till today, nothing has been heard.
He said he believes the investigation got stuck, adding: “We cannot fold our hands and allow this go by.
Ogunye, the NUJ lawyer, said the violation of the right of the press needs to get to another level by making the court make a pronouncement on the violation of press right and freedom of speech generally.
He said Olomofe was still undergoing treatment, especially the the psychological aspect.
The NCS has thus been sued by the NUJ for N500 million.
Olomofe, said those who assaulted him are well known people in the Seme area.
He said there was a particular Customs agent known to be very wicked and notorious who took part in the act.
He identified him by his alias: “Basket.”
Olomofe said the case was coming up now because of the time needed to heal the serious injuries he sustained.
He encouraged the press not to be quiet about this, adding: “An injury to one is an injury to all.”
