In a ruling on an application to re-list the fundamental human rights suit filed against the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs, Comptroller Garba M. Ndalati, Deputy Comptroller Emmanuel Nkemdirim, Assistant Comptroller Ibrahim Nuru Turaki and leaders of a notorious border smuggling cabal allegedly led by one Suleiman Momoh, Sam Madubuike and two others by the NUJ, Justice Anka directed that the suit must be given accelerated hearing from the next adjourned date
Joined in the suit as respondents are the Comptroller-General of Customs, Muhammed Ndalati, Emmanuel Nkemdirim and Ibrahim Turaki.
The suit was filed following severe assault and beating the journalist allegedly received in the hands of Customs officers and some hoodlums allegedly hired by them
In a statement by the council’s lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, Olomofe, who had been having a running battle with the Nigeria Customs Service, was invited to the State CID, Panti, Lagos for clarification on the matter
Police detained Olomofe early Thursday evening in Lagos, after men he had accused of severely beating him in June 2015 alleged the publisher had assaulted and attempted to extort money from them, Olomofe and his lawyer told CPJ by telephone
The NUJ is asking for N500 million as special and exemplary damages for the violation of the applicant’s fundamental human rights.
Olomofe is the Editorial Board Chairman of Badagry Prime news magazine
The Lagos NUJ had filed the case against the defendants on behalf of the Badagry-based journalist for the enforcement of his fundamental rights to life, dignity of the human person and freedom of expression and the press, following the severe assault and beating he suffered in hands of the Customs and some hoodlums allegedly hired by the Custom officials
Ogunye, the NUJ lawyer, said the violation of the right of the press needs to get to another level by making the court make a pronouncement on the violation of press right and freedom of speech generally
