Paul Aigbogun, Head Coach of the Flying Eagles, on Sunday said his team was still a work in progress ahead of the 2019 African Youth Championship, 2019 AYC, finals in Niger.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Aigbogun’s side qualified for the 2019 AYC on Saturday after defeating Mauritania 5-0 (6-1 on aggregate) in their final qualifying round fixture.
Nazifi Yahaya bagged a hat trick in the encounter, while Wasiu Alalade and Aremu Afeez were also on target.
Aigbogun told NAN that there was still a lot to be done to make his team World beaters, adding that he will fortify the team with more quality players who will add new dynamics to the team.
He said: “We are happy we are through to the competition proper, but we believe we have a lot more in us to offer.
“The pitch made it difficult for us to play freely, but I guess the harder part of the job has been done. We have qualified.
“However, we won’t rest on our oars, we will keep working hard to ensure we present a good team worth representing the country at the tournament in Niger.”
On the inclusion of Aremu Afeez, the head coach explained that he was an easy choice considering the fact that he was available for the game.
He said: “He’s a good player and it was easy to draft him in because he was available for the game.”
The 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, which will take place from Feb. 24 to March 10 in Niger, will be the 15th edition of the tournament.
The top four teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
Zambia is the defending champion.
