11 die in Venezuelan prison mutiny

A mutiny in a Venezuelan prison has left 11 people dead, a prisoners’ rights group said on Friday.
“The mutiny occurred in Fenix prison in the north-western region of Lara overnight,’’ Carlos Nieto from a non-governmental organization, Una Ventana a la Libertad, said.
He said nine inmates and two guards were killed and 28 others injured.
In March, a mutiny in police jail in the northern state of Carabobo left 68 people dead.
Critics attributed the violence partly to overcrowding.
According to the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons, the country’s seven most crowded penitentiaries have 30,790 inmates, five times as many as they have room for.
