The Management of Shell Petroleum Development Company on Thursday said it would support an innovative energy generation development that would tackle Nigeria’s power challenges.
Obinna Anaba, the Human Resources Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, stated this at the first anniversary of Africa’s First Kinetic Solar Powered Pitch at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos.
Anaba said Shell was committed to collaboration with inventors to create smart solutions that would generate more and cleaner energy across the world, adding that the problem of electricity in Africa requires collaboration.
He said that the current energy was not enough to satisfy growing energy needs in Nigeria, adding that this was why the company launched the Shell Kinetic Energy tagged: “Make the Future Campaign”.
According to Anaba: “We believe that working together will transform lives and bring cleaner energy to communities.
“We collaborate with inventors, local communities, engaged citizens and global celebrities to transform lives by putting bright energy ideas into action.
“An example of our last initiative is the Lagos Kinetic Pitch with flood lights powered by energy from players’ footsteps on Pavegen tiles laid under the Astroturf pitch.”
Anaba said that Shell is celebrating one year of Africa’s first Kinetic Pitch as part of its “make the future” campaign and to challenge Nigerian youths on innovations and bright energy ideas that could help in the global quest for more and cleaner energy.
According to him, Shell makes a significant contribution to energy solutions for Nigeria and we are committed to supporting the Nigerian economy and its people.
He said: “We need bright energy ideas. Some of these will come from Shell but naturally, others will come from outside our business.
“So it is crucial that Shell supports energy entrepreneurs and we hope that this pitch will inspire more entrepreneurs and young people to help us make a smarter energy future.”
Anaba said the students were understudying the maintenance of the pitch before it would be finally handed over to the school.
According to him, we have more than 10,000 students within and outside, who are benefiting from the innovative solution to light our football pitch.
Anaba said: “They will be the next generation of teachers across Nigeria and can use their first-hand experience of this pitch to inspire their pupils so that they too can work toward developing bright energy ideas that could make a real difference to their community, Nigeria or even the world.
“Not only our students but the community that surrounds us had already got the benefit from this pitch in the last one year now.”
In his remarks, the Registrar of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Henry Otoighile, commended Shell for its good initiative for citing the kinetic solar powered pitch in the school for students.
Otoighile said that this had helped the technical skills of the students and other schools within the area.
Shell Africa’s first human and solar powered kinetic football pitch was unveiled in December 2015, with large scale effort to develop solar-powered solutions that will provide African communities with access to clean and affordable sources of electricity.
