There are strong indications that senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party are planning to snatch the Senate presidency from the All Progressives Congress.
The APC senators are awaiting the position of the leadership of the party on the zoning of positions, especially the principal officers of the National Assembly.
The leadership of the party is expected to meet on Thursday.
The APC has about 60 senators elected on its platform in the March 28 National Assembly election, while the PDP that before now had the majority, only has 49 senators elected in the election.
According to credible sources among the PDP senators, the party is waiting for the APC to commit blunders in its zoning arrangement on the Senate president.
It has already been touted that the slot would be given to either the North East or the North Central.
The source added that the PDP senators are ready to speak with one voice in the fight for Senate president’s slot.
A senator from the APC, who confided in The Eagle Online on Tuesday, expressed the fear that the PDP would likely grab the Senate presidency if the APC does not put its house in order.
The senator also said for the sake of justice and fair play, the APC leadership should zone the Senate presidency to the North East that produced the second highest number of votes to the party after the North West.
He also argued that because the North East had been devastated as a result of insurgency and has been the most marginalised in terms of infrastructural facilities, ceding the Senate presidency to it would assuage the zone.
He added that the North East has never been given the opportunity of occupying the Senate presidency since the Second Republic, adding that the North Central had always been occupying the seat.
The APC senator said since 1999, it was the two North East states of Borno and Yobe that had been steadfast in the opposition apart from Lagos State, adding that zoning the seat to the zone would encourage the people for their steadfastness.
