More than 80 culverts and drains have been constructed on the Section One of the Ibadan-Lagos Road Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, an official said on Friday.
The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Godwin Eke, told the News Agency of Nigeria that crushed rocks had been used to replace soil on six kilometers of the road.
Eke said that the replacement took place on the inner right side of the Lagos- bound lane.
He added that the such replacement took place on five kilometres of the road on the outer right hand side.
He said: “We have covered more than eight kilometres of macadam but we cannot open it for traffic because of our attitude to driving and the likelihood of turning the portion to a garage.
“Some people are already doing that but we are stopping them.”
According to Eke, macadam, a water resistant material used to construct durable roads, was used on the Lagos-bound lane of carriageway, beginning from the Sagamu Interchange.
Eke said that heavy rainfall and reckless driving were major factors causing gridlock on the highway.
He noted that road construction, rehabilitation and traffic diversion were going on simultaneously on the Section One, which spanned Lagos and Sagamu Interchange.
He added: “Anywhere we have a construction zone, traffic will be slow but we created additional lanes for diversion.
“The problem there is indiscipline by motorists.
“Everybody wants to go at the same time, but I believe if they are patient, two lanes can take them.
“This is also the height of rainy season.
“When we excavate and it rains, we cannot cover it.”
The controller said that the project was seven per cent completed, but gave the assurance that it would be completed on schedule.
The project, being carried out by the Julius Berger Plc, is scheduled to be completed within 48 months.
