The Senate Committee on Public Account on Thursday stated that the Office of Auditor General of the Federation is designed to fail.
The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Matthew Urogbide, who made this known while addressing newsmen, said some agencies have not submitted their report for the past 10 years.
According to Urogbide: “Our observation is that many of MDAs don’t submit their audited report to office of Auditor General.
“The office of Public Account is designed to fail.”
Urogbide wondered how an agency like the OAGF’s office could function without a work force, adding that the agency lacks needed financial strength.
He said the country spends a lot of money to fight corruption but earmarks meagre amount of money to the Auditor General’s office that will check corruption.
He added that the budget of the OAGF must be increased in order for the agency to carry out its responsibility effectively.
According to him: “The budget of the OAGF must be increased so that they carry out their responsibility.
“Enough resources must be allocated to OAGF.
“Executive must come with proper allocation to that office.
“To fight corruption, it is not the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) you must pay first.
“Fund must be allocated to OAGF if the government is serious in combating corruption.
“They have to come with proper budget for this office.”
Speaking at the briefing, the Auditor General of the Federation, Anthony Ayine, lamented that lack of funds has seriously affected proper auditing of Ministries, Departments and Agencies across the country .
According to him, there is no fund available right now to carry out audit of some government agencies.
