Zaria clash: Commission again adjourns as Shiites boycott sitting

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the December 12, 2015 Army/Shiites clash in Zaria, Kaduna State has again adjourned sitting following the continuous refusal of the Shiite members to attend.
The commission at its sitting on Monday shifted its sitting for the third time till March 7 to allow members of the sect to attend.
The Chairman of the commission, Justice Muhammadu Garba, said the adjournment was sequel to the request of the defence counsel, Maxwell Kyon.
Kyon had informed the panel that he was yet to get access to the group’s spiritual leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
According to the counsel, he is yet to get briefing from El-Zakzaky, believed to be in the custody of the Directorate of State Services.
He asked the panel to set another date, which the commission obliged and adjourned sitting till March 7.
Meanwhile, members of the sect have said that they would not attend the commission’s sitting until El-Zakzaky is released unconditionally.
Mallam Abdullahi Bello, a member of the sect, said at a news conference in Kaduna on Monday that the commission should also be reconstituted to give the group a fair hearing.
“We would consult and direct our lawyers on the next course of action in search of justice in this matter,” Bello said.
