No fewer than 1,000 women and youths of Adesa village in Amukpe Community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State have protested the removal of their village from Amukpe community.
The protesters paralyzed all business activities in the council area, wondering why the 13-man committee constituted by the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom plotted to drive them away from their village of origin.
The committee set up in its newly drafted constitution, deleted Adesa Village from the list of 16 villages making up Amukpe community.
Irked by this, the women, not counting their children, husbands and youths, did not only decry the ploy, but trooped to the streets of their village, rejecting the outcome.
The spokesperson of the protesters, Madam Alice Ejiro, noted that they decided to protest against the “evil act against humanity” because “we want the general public and the government at all levels to be aware of the move and plan to make us strangers in our own community by some shameless people who are doing their master’s biding.”
Ejiro continued: “If they decide to go ahead with their evil plans against us, then we shall drag them to the court of law, so that they can show us why they deleted us because past constitutions drafted and used in Amukpe community recognizes and empowers us as part of the community.”
She called on all security agencies to come their aid if peace must reign in the agrarian community.
She accused the chairman and secretary of the constitution drafting committee, O. Odiete and Dennis Odebala, of being the masterminds of the “hatchet” job, maintaining that “the last communiqué issued on Monday 21st January 2013, signed by the 16 villages recognized Adesa Village.”
