Why Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is flooded – FG

The Federal Government has said the flooding on a portion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was caused by the blockage of water channels along the road by some structures.
In a statement on Friday, the Federal Government said it had directed Julius Berger Plc, which is handling the portion of the road around Mowe, to provide more palliatives to ameliorate the difficulties caused to motorists by the flooding.
Last week, motorists and commuters at some point in time spent over seven hours crossing both ends of the expressway for a journey that ordinarily was less than 30 minutes.
The flooding is noticeable around Mountain Top University portion of the expressway.
The statement explained that the blocked locations, which are now built up, were the drainage basins where surface runoff was directed when the road was built about 40 years ago.
It said the flooding has also been accentuated by some of the communities in the area believed to be discharging their runoffs to the road where drains are yet to be provided, adding that the rains have also been unusually heavy in the past few days, thereby undermining the palliative efforts recently done by the contractor.
