Defending champion Wellington Jighere is to lead the eight-man Nigeran team heading for Kenya for the 2017 World English Scrabble Players’ Association Championship, an official said on Thursday.
Tony Ikolo, the Senior National Team Coach of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja the team would leave for Nairobi on Sunday.
Ikolo said the team was currently camping in Ibadan ahead of the championship slated to hold from Monday to November 12 in Nairobi.
He said: “We are in camp putting finishing touches to our training, as we are supposed to leave the country for Nairobi on Sunday.
“But we are still waiting on the Minister of Youths and Sports Development to help facilitate the release of funds for us to be able to attend the championship.”
NAN reports that the team had earlier held a five-day self-sponsored open camping in Port Harcourt in preparation for the championship.
The 2017 WESPAC is the second edition of the competition, after a hugely successful debut in Perth 2015.
