As Team Nigeria continues the hunt for a medal at the ongoing 2016 Rio Olympics, Anthony Konyegwachie, the Head Coach of Nigeria’s boxing team, boasted that lone boxer, Efe Ajagba, would deliver the first medal to the country.
Nigeria has yet to win a medal of any colour at the ongoing Games.
A statement released by Team Nigeria Press Officer, Tony Ubani, on Monday said the boxing event of the Rio Olympics would see Ajagba fight on Tuesday against another crack Kazakhstan’s boxer and bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, Ivan Fyodorovich Dychko.
Konyegwachie said: “We’re going to deliver the first medal to Team Nigeria here in Rio.
“Ajagba is going to hit another knockout to move into the semi-final.
“Tell them that I have said so.
“I know the stuff that Ajagba is made of.
“He has been training hard and he is in a killer mood.
“Nobody will stop him.”
But Ajagba’s opponent, who also earned a knockout to get to the quarterfinal, has an intimidating record, having won a bronze medal at the London Games four years ago.
And before coming for the current Games, the boxer, it was claimed, spent two weeks training with the World Champion, Vladimir Klitschko, and his team.
He is 2.02m tall and also rated number two in the +91 kg class.
But Konyegwachie said: “There is nothing to be afraid of.
“Ajagba is also a tough nut to crack.
“Mark my words: Ajagba will deliver another knockout and get Team Nigeria its first medal.”
