President of the Weightlifting Federation of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Chibudum Nwuche, has vowed to do everything humanly possible to ensure Nigeria wins medals at the 2016 Olympic Games.
The Weightlifting boss, who did not categorically specify whether it’s going to be either gold, silver or bronze, told NationSport he would work in tandem with his Board members to make sure the game brings medals to the country.
Nwuche said: “We had our last appearance in 2000 Sydney Olympics, which is for men’s weightlifting.
“The paralympians also did well at the last London Olympics.
“We will get more medals for sure in 2016 Olympics.
“It is not too difficult to surpass the past records.
“We will work hard, we will train hard and encourage our youths and we will get support from my friends and colleagues and Nigerians generally and we will do well in weightlifting this time around by the special grace of God.”
The former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives also assured Nigerians on funding of the sport.
He said: “What will drive contribution towards weightlifting under my watch will be the fact those who support the project will be sure that the money they contribute will be applied properly and transparently in my normal manner to the noble cause they have done this.
“We will render account and they (those who contributed funds) will see their contributions translate to better performance by the athletes by way of winning medals.
“You know there is paucity of funds these days for everything.
“There has to be some creativity in how one goes about sourcing for funds form sports.
“We will engage stakeholders and the more they are convinced as to the genuineness of our needs, they will contribute.
“Also with the already existing good will for sports it will be easier to get funds.”
