The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, has assured Nigerians that the allegation of underaged voting in some parts of the North is being investigated.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Sunday evening, Jega said the commission has directed the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state concerned to investigate.
Specifically, the REC, according to him, has been asked to identify why it happened and to fish out the officers responsible for the registration of the underaged voters.
Jega stressed that underage registration and voting are illegal, promising that culprits would not go scot free.
He said: “We are investigating this (underage voting) and we will take appropriate measures once it is established.”
On the Boko Haram attack in Gombe State, the INEC boss confirmed that two INEC ad hoc staff died.
Jega described the incident as unfortunate and sent condolences to the families of the deceased.
