The sole administrator of National Iron Ore Mining Company Limited, Itakpe, Bernard Ifechi Nnagah, has stressed that the organization was ready to use technology in advancing its objective as the “heart of the steel industry” in the country.
Nnagah stated this when journalists and participants in the media immersion programme orgainsed by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in conjunction with the Open Society Initiative for West Africa went on a facility tour in NIOMCO, Itakpe, Kogi State.
Nnagah also explained that NIOMCO has made a lot of progress under the leadership of Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the Minister of Mines and Steel.
He stated that the organization is ready to push itself to the next level if the required funding is available.
He said: “NIOMCO’s modest achievement and other activities by NIOMCO under the present administration include: improved security operations, restoration and regular industrial/residential electrical consumption, relocation to the present site office after eight years abandonment as well as maintenance of peace and harmony among staff and with catchment communities.
“Recently, six number of water boreholes were drilled with water reticulation extended to all the residential quarters.
“We are also drilling one borehole for the nearby Abobo community as corporate social responsibility.”
In a related development, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Mining Workers, Comrade Ogbokor A. Newlife, has urged the government to look into the problems of the company such as poor remuneration, health and hazard risks and other factors that affect workers in the mining sector.
Newlife emphasized that these problems should be deeply looked into before the issue of concessioning comes into perspective.
Responding, the Chief of Staff on the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Seun Odewale, remarked that the problems of the workers will be rectified as soon as possible.
