The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance, Chief Sam
Nkire, has advised all the party’s chairmen at the state, local
government and ward levels to continue to conduct party affairs under
the old name, until the Independent National electoral Commission
gives it the nod to use the new name, the All Progressive People
Alliance.
In a statement personally signed by Chief Nkire, the party said it
would amount to jumping the gun if members went ahead to campaign
without the new certificate.
The PPA national chairman said that the party’s highest policy making
body, the National Convention, decided to change the name of PPA after exhaustive considerations, including the names of other existing political parties in the country.
Reacting to the protest from the All Progressives Grand Alliance over
the new name, Chief Nkire said APPA was in no way similar to APGA.
He said this was not even in the name, acronym or logo and wondered
why even the authentic National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh,
among others, should feel threatened by the new name.
He added that PPA was a democratic and law abiding political party,
which manifesto is anchored on peace, equity and progress but would
however not shy away from its constitutional right to change its name
whenever it wished to do so.
Meanwhile, Chief Nkire has dismissed the story making the rounds in
the social media that INEC has already approved the new name.
He said this was false and without foundation.
He urged all those who came across that story to disregard it as,
according to him, such stories could not have been planted by those
who wish PPA well.
