Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State said in Jalingo on Sunday that residents of the section of Taraba State that opted out of Southern Cameroon to be in Nigeria were still happy with that decision.
“A part of Taraba was once part of Southern Cameroon before they voted to join Nigeria; such people are happy they took that decision and will never toy with Nigeria’s unity and oneness,” he said.
Ishaku spoke during a special Church programme held at Salvation Baptist Church, Jalingo to mark Nigeria’s 57 year’s of independence.
He stressed the need for a united and strong nation, pointing out that everyone would benefit if Nigeria became developed and great.
Represented by Abel Diah, the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Ishaku urged all tribes of the nation to work for Nigeria’s unity, and frowned at the unconstitutional means adopted by aggrieved Nigerians in pursuing their concerns.
He said: “There are constitutional means we could use to pursue our demands without causing a breach of the peace.”
Gebon Kataps, an elder of the Church, in a remark, appealed to Nigerians to unite against injustice and corruption, saying that the two evils were standing on the path of Nigeria’s march to greatness.
“Secession is not the solution; all we want is a country where there is justice and fairness to all,” Kataps said.
Special prayers were offered for the peaceful coexistence of the nation.
