The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress.
Tambuwal was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
There have been speculations for weeks about when he would formally announce his decision to quit the PDP for the APC.
Tambuwal made the formal announcement of his defection on the floor of the House on Tuesday.
He told his colleagues in the House: “In pursuit of the provision of the 1999 Constitution and political development in my state, I wish to formally inform you of my membership of APC.
“This is in continuation of the great sacrifice and also the need to ensure the development of constitutional democracy.”
Tambuwal, after the announcement, adjourned the sitting of the House till December 4.
Tambuwal’s defection came on a day the Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, formally declared his presidential ambition on the platform of the APC in Abuja.
