The Council, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, at an Extra-Ordinary virtual NCS meeting on Tuesday, unanimously agreed to the postponement.
In a communique issued at the end of its two-day meeting on Friday in Asaba, Delta State, the Council, however, stressed that the Games would be held under strict COVID-19 protocols.
The National Council on Sports on Wednesday said it has upgraded five sports to medal-winning events at the National Sports Festival effective from the 2020 edition in Benin, Edo State.
Having postponed the 19th National Sports Festival for six years, the Council resolved that the continued delay of the hosting of the Festival was detrimental to the growth of sports in Nigeria and therefore withdrew the hosting rights from Cross River State
Adesola Olusade, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, disclosed this while speaking on the submissions by delegates of various states.
He also stated that he was informed that the last meeting, held in Ilorin, Kwara State, endorsed the introduction of the National Youth Games and the opening up of the National Sports Festival to all Nigerians
