Emerging from a meeting with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ortom disclosed that the state had recorded a case of the deadly fever
“Among the five cases from Edo, four are from Estako West Local Government Area, while the remaining case is from Uhumwonde area of the state.”
According to him: “Measures are being put in place to address the development as blood samples of those suspected to have been infected by the disease have been taken for laboratory test at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in Abuja and Lagos
He said: “It is a zoonotic disease, which means that humans get the disease when they come in contact with animals that serve as reservoir of the virus
Adewole said: “The public is hereby assured that government and its partners and other stakeholders are working tirelessly to address the outbreak and bring it to timely end
In response to the current Lassa fever outbreak, the Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to coordinate the response and provide support to the affected states to fight and prevent the spread of the outbreak, as well as establishing case management centres in tertiary institutions in the states
He said the state ministry health had recorded 15 cases and four had died from the disease. He decried the current challenge being faced in controlling the disease
