Less than 24 hours after the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state, the Niger State Government on Friday called on members of the public not to panic as measures are in place to take care of the suspected patients in the state.
The Commissioner for Health and Health Services, Dr. Mustapha Jibril, said this while responding to questions in Minna.
Jibril said government has stepped in to contain the situation.
According to him: “Measures are being put in place to address the development as blood samples of those suspected to have been infected by the disease have been taken for laboratory test at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in Abuja and Lagos.
“I wish to allay the fears of our people on the reported case of breakout of Lassa fever in three communities in Fuka ward of Muyan Local Government Areas of the state.
“The state government has taken steps to contain the disease and its spread.
“The Ministry of Health and Health Services have swung into action in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation and the local government to bring the situation under control.”
Jibril further said his ministry has strengthened monitoring and surveillance on the affected communities in Fuka ward of Muyan Local Government Area of the state.
He then called on members of the public to come up with information on any suspected disease or death to the nearest health facilities.
