Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had over a week ago assented to the amended Electoral Act, requesting the removal of Clause 84 (12) of the act.

Buhari had last week requested for the amendment of section 84 (12) which will empower political appointees to vote.

Justice Inyang Ekwo in a ruling on an ex parte application by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agreed that the Electoral Act had become a valid law and could not be tampered with without following due process.

It is pertinent to recall that during the ceremony, Mr. President voiced his reservation with respect of the provision of Section 84(12) of the new Law. According to the statement credited to Mr. President, he noted that the said provision is in conflict with extant constitutional provisions.

This followed the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

The Senator said had Buhari refused to sign it, nothing would have stopped the National Assembly from embarrassing him.

The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, also saluted the courage of the PDP and other opposition members in the National Assembly (NASS) for standing their ground on the passage of the Act.

The CNPP is insisting that the clause actually introduced equity into political party primaries at all levels.
