The General Secretary, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, University of Lagos Chapter, Benjamin Anosike, on Monday said the members at the institution had joined their counterparts to begin a strike.
Anosike told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that they had begun the strike on Monday because of the stoppage of their salaries since August.
Anosike said that they had made enquiries and had got no explanation as to why they were not being paid.
The national body of SSANU had on Thursday said that a strike was being considered to protest the stoppage of the salaries of its members.
SSANU had said that they had written a letter to the Vice-Chancellors of the affected federal universities and Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The union said it had also written to the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu; the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike; and the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie.
It said that the non-payment of its members in some universities, when some other federal universities have since paid the August salaries, was viewed as an act of punishment against the workers.
It had said that SSANU members would be at liberty to direct members to stop work if the government refused to pay the salaries, which were stopped in August
