Standard Organisation of Nigeria on Wednesday arraigned a businessman, Emeka Nwankwo and his wife, Adaobi, at the Federal High Court sitting in Awka for allegedly manufacturing substandard aluminum roofing sheets.
Nwankwo, who is the Managing Director of Great Meckon Investment and his wife, were being tried for manufacture of sub-standard products and sale of the product without compliance with the Nigerian Industrial Standards for public use.
The accused are based at the International Building Material Market, Ogidi in Anambra.
SON’s prosecuting counsel, J.A. Olofindare, said the accused were engaged in the manufacture of aluminum roofing sheets and sales of the product for public consumption without first complying with the Nigerian Industrial Standards as required by law.
He said the accused “manufactured aluminum roofing sheets which fall below requisite and expected quality’’.
Olofindare alleged that SON personnel had taken samples of the said product for laboratory test, adding that he hoped to call five witnesses to proof his case.
He said that the offence contravened Section 26(2)(i) of the SON Act 2015, and Section 1(18) (ii) of the miscellaneous offences Act, CAP M17 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.
The defense counsel, P.I Chukwudebelu, applied for the bail of his clients, saying both are husband and wife, running a joint business.
Chukwudebelu said they were willing to stand trial and promised that he would ensure they were in court during every court’s proceedings.
The prosecutor did not object to the application for bail.
Justice N.I. Oweibo, granted the defendants bail in the um of N1 million and a surety in like sum.
He held that such surety must not be lower than GL 8 in the civil service for a like sum and adjourned the matter till May 24 for hearing.
