Sole administrator tasks Alimosho residents on clean drains

The Sole Administrator of Alimosho Local Government Council, Lagos, Ganiyu Quadri, on Friday urged residents of the council to imbibe good sanitation habits, to protect the environment and avert flooding.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Quadri spoke against the backdrop of the takeover of ecological projects from the Federal Government in the area on Wednesday.
While handing over the “Oghere Ahmed Erosion Control Works’’ project in Idimu, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Dr Habiba Lawal, frowned at refuse dumped in the newly-inaugurated drains.
Quadri told NAN that the council was taking tough stands against the contravention of sanitation laws and that it regularly embarked on the cleaning of drains to ensure a healthy environment.
Quadri said: “What we will do is to put a stamp of authority here that environmental sanitation must be well taken care of.
“We will keep sensitising the residents that is not good to cart refuse from your house and put them inside the drainage channels.
“It does not do us any good because if there is rainfall, these refuse would be washed away to another area and cause a blockade that will affect us all.
“We are doing our best in Lagos to stem flooding and the state government has spent enormous amounts of money to combat it.
“And if the residents are not clean, then it becomes an issue, as cleanliness is next to Godliness.
“We must imbibe the culture of cleanliness.”
Quadri appealed to residents to patronise the various PSP operators who were working round the clock to properly dispose their refuse.
The sole administrator also advised residents to observe all the sanitation days in the state, as well as improve on personal environmental cleaning habits.
He said: “I don’t see any reason why people should cart away refuse from their houses and put them in the drains, for who, for the government?
“If there is flood disaster here, it will affect only residents; Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the deputy governor and the Speaker of the House of Assembly do not live here.
“We should avert any catastrophe by just doing the right thing; we should learn from history and not allow the mistakes of the past to jeopardise our environment.”
Quadri stressed the need for all tiers of government to continue to work together for a cleaner and safer environment.
