The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two security guards attached to a company at the Ilupeju area of the state.
The guards were alleged to have teamed up with four suspected thieves to rob the company they were supposed to watch.
The suspects were alleged to have offered N200,000 bribe to a police patrol team attached to Ilupeju Police Station, after they stumbled on the suspected thieves at about 2am, loading their trucks with products from the company.
The products have been identified as 630 bags of PVC chemicals valued at N3 million.
The suspects have been identified as Suleiman Alabi, Obete Obete, Olalere Olanrewaju, Akeem Taiwo, Fatai Aweda and Suleiman Aremu.
Aweda and Alabi were the motor boys who came with Taiwo, the driver of the truck, to cart away the chemicals.
The security guards are Obete and Olanrewaju, while the buyer, who was already at the scene, is Aremu.
Attempting to exonerate themselves, the security guards told police that it was Alabi who convinced them to venture into the illegal business.
Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident and the arrest of the men, said: “If not that they were caught in the act, the security guards would have come up with the story that they were overpowered and tied up by the robbers.
“That’s the latest trend that we have uncovered among security guard who team up with robbers to rob the companies they are supposed to watch.”
It was gathered that on February 7, 2014 at about 2am, while the patrol team was on a routine around the Ilupeju axis, the noticed suspicious movements at 6, Industrial Avenue, Ilupeju.
According to the police, one of the principal suspects, Aremu, was the person who offered N200,000 bribe to them with a view to free the suspects.
Braide said that they would be charged to court for conspiracy and stealing and for offering bribe to policemen.
